Growing Up As...Taylor Swift

Growing Up As…Taylor Swift is the uplifting biography of a girl who grew up on a Christmas tree farm and became one of the most beloved musical artists of all time.

In middle school, Taylor was bullied and ostracized by her schoolmates because they were jealous of her early success. Yet young Taylor never stopped doing what she loved: singing!

Taylor wrote her first song when she was twelve. At thirteen she landed a record deal. At fourteen she became the youngest songwriter at Sony Records. At sixteen she recorded her first hit song.

Growing Up As…Taylor Swift reminds children that dreams really can come true if you believe in yourself and never stop doing what brings you joy.

A biography for children who avoid biographies! This is the perfect book for those students who always tell the teacher, “I don’t like to read biographies!”I was one of those students, and yet I honestly believe I would have loved this one.Mrs. Griffin’s book will surely be a hit with young people in elementary grades and above. It will be especially inspiring and comforting for any child who has experienced being treated meanly in school. And, even though Taylor Swift’s personal goal has been in music, any child who dreams of succeeding in any other field will see a positive role model in Taylor Swift. Some other high points: it’s a quick read, it’s well-documented, and it has lovely art work by Valerie Valdivia and Vajihe Golmazari.

Fun and right on time! I was excited to read this story as I had just seen the Eras Tour movie. The story introduced readers to a very young Taylor Swift and described her motivation to be a singer, the steps she took to make her dreams come true, and the support she received from her family. The book is a delightful tale about a talented and interesting person. I will definitely share it with my grandsons.

A Role Model for Young Fans Swift wasn’t immune to the quicksand that threatens tweens and teens, but instead of dissolving in the face of social pressures and mean-girl bullying, she directed her focus to poetry and music. As this book reveals, staying grounded in goals and family propelled her on a whirlwind path from childhood outcast to unprecedented celebrity and self-realization. Not every kid is gifted with Swift’s talents, but the 12-time Grammy winner’s messages of affirmation, resilience, hope and healthy values – consistently articulated in her lyrics and in this charming mini-life story – are universal. Written in relatable terms that can be digested and applied from adolescence through adulthood, this is a must-read for all ages, whether you’re a starry-eyed Swiftie or a parent looking to point a child to a stalwart, positive role model.

Inspirational book for young readers What makes a superstar tick? The When They Were Kids series from Owl Moon Press, opens our eyes to the early childhood journey of popular and successful people. Growing up as Taylor Swift gives us a glimpse of how this global superstar started out just like the rest of us. When her performance in a second-grade play brought the house down, Taylor was bitten by the performance bug. This inspiring book shows how Taylor’s love for writing in her diary was the path to her lifelong destiny. We learn how a “magical twist of fate” brought music to her words and launched her songwriting career. As a ten-year old, she loved to perform in front of a big crowd. At age 11, she was knocking on doors in Nashville and handing out demo CDs.While success came early, so did the consequences. Growing up as Taylor Swift gets to the heart of how she learned to handle being on the outside of the In Crowd. This book is a great read and will inspire kids to follow their dreams, rise above the noise of the crowd and never give up.

PERSEVERANCE WOW! Two major take-always from Ms. Griffin’s book will be an inspiration to any young female reader: Staying True To Oneself and Perseverance. The incredibly talented young Taylor never doubted that her talent would one day catapult her to fame, and she showed an extraordinary ability to persevere as she pushed forward to achieve her goal of sharing her songs with the world. After reading this book, I predict Ms. Swift will not let fame destroy her (as it has to so many in the music industry) because she is well-grounded from growing up with a supportive family. She also recognizes that God, her family, country radio and fans “changed my life,” p.75. Ms. Swift’s ability to be grateful and her love of music will continue to be her greatest strengths.
